To the heavens I aspire. That’s why you named me after a famous astronomer and mathematician. Much like this master, I too dare to challenge and play my own tune. I know that one day, my story will be told. Do you hear them too, those inner voices singing in harmony? Were Johann Sebastian Bach, Claude Debussy, and Philip Glass inspired by the same? The rules of eternity and symmetry help compose my music, much in accord with the great space beyond.
Where do the beginnings lie, and where are the ends? I am merely a minor member of this empyreal orchestra and play out my humble role. Following an ingenious plan, I unfold my leaves like feathered wings, ready to take me away. My notes complement each other. One note, one nuance, reaches out for the next. Each leaf stands in relation to the one before and the one after, like the steps of a grand flight of stairs, flowing into and out of each other all at the same time.
I arrange my leaves like voluminous antennae, scanning the firmament for inspiration. The flowing rhythm of the benevolent unknown reveals itself to me. In beauty, as in great song, lies the source.
Home:
Singapore, Gardens by the Bay
Tree species:
Copernicia fallaensis
Tree family:
Arecaceae, palm
Common Names:
Cuban Wax Palm, Yarey
Motivation:
I photographed this palm tree in “Gardens by the Bay” in Singapore. The designers of this impressive park built a high walkway connected by tree-like towers for a magnificent view. Looking down from this OCBC Skyway, you can peer right into the hearts of the trees.
